What to Wear at Jökulsárlón, Activity by Activity

The operators hand out the specialist gear. What you bring is the layers underneath and the right boots.

Updated 4 October 2026

In shortBring warm layers, a waterproof jacket, a hat and gloves in every season. On the water the operators provide the protective gear: a flotation suit on the Zodiac, a drysuit for kayaking. On the glacier, boots that cover the ankle are compulsory; trainers are turned away, and boots can be rented at the meeting point.

Boots: the item that gets people turned away

For glacier walks the operator is explicit: stiff hiking boots that cover the ankle, no soft low shoes or sneakers. Without suitable footwear you may have to rent, or in the worst case lose your place under the cancellation terms. If you do not own boots, rent them at the meeting point rather than gamble.
